When it comes to Marvel movies, it feels like everyone’s waiting for the next overarching menace to show up so our heroes will be forced to team up to save the world. So far, no Avengers movie has been announced for phase 4 (or anything beyond that) and it’s making people wonder whether we’ll even get a new Avengers movie once it’s all said and done.
All we really need for an Avengers movie is a team, a big villain and high stakes. Let’s take a look at what phase 4 has already shown us so far and find out whether we’ve got all the necessary ingredients so far.
The Old Team
This should probably be the easiest one. Where most of the original Avengers have either died, left the superhero life or just gone off to do different things, there’s plenty of heroes left that could be a part of the next Avengers team. First off, we have Spider-Man. No Way Home was a huge success so it’s impossible to imagine that whatever Marvel has planned next, Spider-Man wouldn’t be a part of it.
Next up: Captain Marvel. We know she has a movie coming where she’ll introduce Ms. Marvel and Spectrum to the world, but Captain Marvel herself is still lacking in a real storyline. So far she’s been used as a deus ex machina – albeit an effective one – and a new Avengers movie would be the perfect opportunity to let her take a more leadership role in the team.
Black Panther is definitely going to be in it, although we can’t really say in what shape or form. We know T’Challa isn’t coming back due to Disney not wanting to recast Chadwick Boseman after his unfortunate death. The next movie is still coming so I guess we’ll get more information then.
Dr. Strange is becoming more and more of a lynchpin in the MCU story so not having him be there when the stakes are at their highest seems a bit weird, right? Yeah, Dr. Strange is definitely going to be in the Avengers.
Ant-Man is going to be introducing our new big bad late next year, so it would be a bad move on Marvel to not have him in the actual Avengers team that fights this threat. It’s pretty much guaranteed that we haven’t seen the last of Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Other Possible Additions
If we’re looking at new Avenger-worthy introduced characters in the MCU, we see Sam Wilson Captain America, Shang-Chi and the Eternals. Sam has the highest chance of making it in an Avengers movie, but any could be a worthy addition. Whether Thor or any of the Guardians of the Galaxy will be back to fight alongside the Avengers remains to be seen. Marvel might keep Jane Foster Thor to have her be the Avengers Thor while other Thor does more galactic/cosmic stuff.
The Big Villain
This is also a pretty easy one. Loki introduced the weirdest and most charismatic villain we’ve ever seen, Kang. After his untimely demise at the hands of female Loki, he warned the Lokis that his death would lead to an infinite number of Kang variants that all want to take over the multiverse. Sounds like a problem only a team of Avengers can fix, right?
High Stakes
Well, we know Kang the Conqueror wants to, well, conquer. We just don’t really know how or why or which powers the Kang variant will have access to. Or if it’ll even be just one variant. There’s still a lot up in the air about this and to be honest the Loki Kang didn’t seem like that much of a threat at all. I guess Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will give us more insight into how the Kang story will lead to a crisis that the Avengers have to beat.
