9 Weirdest Things Found at the Bottom of the Ocean

The ocean is enormous and very good at hiding things. Shipwrecks, lost cities, and unknown items have all turned up deep beneath the waves. And since huge parts of the seafloor are still not fully explored, there’s probably a lot more weirdness waiting down there, but here are some of the coolest things discovered at the bottom of the ocean.

1. A Native American Burial Site

One of the oldest discoveries on this list was found off the coast of Venice, Florida. In 2016, a diver spotted an unusual bone and sent a photo to archaeologists. That single find led researchers to something much bigger: an ancient Native American burial site. The site is around 7,000 years old. It was once a freshwater pond, but rising sea levels eventually swallowed it. Amazingly, the peat helped preserve bones, skull fragments, and carved wooden stakes, making this discovery super rare.

2. The City of Pavlopetri

This ancient Greek city was discovered in 1967, and according to the archaeologists, it’s believed to be around 5,000 years old, making it one of the oldest known underwater settlements. When researchers returned to study it more closely in 2009, they mapped roads, courtyards, tombs, and building foundations. So, it wasn’t just a random ruined temple. People actually walked those streets at one point, and now it’s all at the bottom of the sea. Some people think that Pavlopetri may be the progenitor of the legend of Atlantis, but nobody has been able to prove or disprove that.

3. Ancient Analog Computer

Found in 1900 in a shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera, this curious device had been soaking up the Mediterranean waters for almost 2,000 years. Thanks to X-rays and CT scans, the researchers were able to see that inside it, there’s a surprisingly complex system of gears and inscriptions. It’s widely believed the mechanism was used to track astronomical events, including the movements of celestial bodies. Either that or it’s some alien doohickey. Nobody really knows.

4. 2000-Year-Old Pills

Another strange ancient find came from a shipwreck off the coast of Italy. Inside the wreck, researchers found wine bottles, lamps, glass jars, medical equipment, and small sealed containers. After X-raying the containers, they found tablets inside. Chemical testing later suggested the pills were likely used as an eyewash. That means someone, around 2,000 years ago, packed medical supplies onto a ship, and those supplies somehow survived at the bottom of the sea long enough for modern researchers to study them.

5. Egyptian City of Heracleion

Long before Alexandria blossomed into the greatest Egyptian port, there was a city of Heracleion. For centuries, many assumed it was but a myth, but then, in the early 2000s, divers found the first signs of its existence in the Mediterranean. And it wasn’t just a few coins and a few stones. They uncovered statues, ships, inscribed slabs, and even sarcophagi. Approximately 1,200 years ago, the city experienced a significant decline due to a natural disaster.

6. Seven Mythical Pagodas

Myths and stories about the Seven Pagodas of Mahabalipuram have spread through India for centuries. According to the legend, there were once seven magnificent temples near the coast, but six were swallowed by the sea, leaving only the famous Shore Temple behind. In 2004, during a massive tsunami, the shoreline receded, revealing the ancient ruins. Sometimes folklore exaggerates, but every now and then, it also points in the right direction.

7. An Old Pirate Port

Being a pirate haven, a trading hub, and a major British naval base, Port Royal in Jamaica had a reputation of being the “Wickedest City on Earth.” Then, in 1692, a massive earthquake caused most of the city to slide into the ocean. Divers began exploring the submerged ruins in the 1950s, and what they found was remarkably well-preserved buildings, shops, and even places like taverns and butcheries.

8. Cuban Pyramids

In 2001, researchers spotted what looked like massive geometric stone structures near Cuba. Some looked like classic pyramids, while others looked circular or arranged in different odd shapes. Was it a lost city? A natural rock formation? Or perhaps it was the legendary Atlantis! Scientists are still baffled, and the site has not been studied well enough to settle this debate once and for all, leaving open the possibility that it could be a natural rock formation, a man-made object, or even something more mysterious like the legendary Atlantis.

9. A Real UFO?

In 2011, Swedish explorers found a weirdly shaped object in the Baltic Sea. The sonar image made it look suspiciously like the famous Millennium Falcon, which obviously could not be true, but it did make a lot of Star Wars fans thrilled. Dubbed the Baltic Sea Anomaly, the object has inspired all sorts of theories ranging from a natural rock formation to a UFO crash site. The most likely explanation is probably geological, but where’s the fun in that? For now, it remains one of the ocean’s strangest-looking question marks.
