9 Controversial Celebrity Couples That Generated Non-Stop Tabloid Drama

There are celebrity couples that prefer to date quietly, settle down, and live relatively normal lives. But these are not those couples.

The relationships in this article all come with either massive age gaps, messy love triangles, public feuds, appalling allegations, or any combination of those. Some ended almost as quickly as they began, while others somehow survived the circus.

1. Elvis and Priscilla Presley

Elvis Presley met Priscilla Beaulieu in Germany in 1959. He was 24 and already one of the most famous pop stars alive. She, however, was only 14. Yikes.

Their relationship continued over several years, with Priscilla eventually moving to Memphis while still a teenager. They married in 1967 and welcomed their daughter, Lisa Marie, the following year. But a marriage like that was doomed from the start. Six years after getting hitched, they decided to split, mostly because Priscilla wanted to discover herself.

2. Courtney Stodden and Doug Hutchinson

Courtney Stodden was just 16 when she married 51-year-old actor Doug Hutchinson in 2011. That alone would supply more material for the tabloids than most regular celeb couples combined.

Not that it’s an excuse, but Hutchinson later said he had no clue Stodden was a minor. Also, because of that, her parents had to approve the Las Vegas wedding. The couple leaned into the drama, appearing together on reality shows such as Couples Therapy. The public treated her as a willing participant in a scandal rather than as a teenager caught in an unhealthy situation. Thankfully, in 2018, Stodden filed for divorce, which was finalized in 2020.

3. Sean Penn and Madonna

Madonna and Sean Penn were two of the biggest stars of the 1980s, so their 1985 marriage was a massive event. Penn had an issue with the paparazzi in particular, which contributed to his reputation as a jealous/aggressive type. And tabloids were happy to publish increasingly disturbing stories about what supposedly happened inside the marriage.

One such allegation claimed that Penn beat and restrained Madonna. Naturally, both stars have denied that outrageous rumor. In a 2015 court declaration, Madonna stated that Penn had never physically assaulted her and called reports claiming otherwise false.

4. Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt

In Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt’s case, nobody knew where the reality show ended and actual reality began. Spencer loved playing the bad guy, while Heidi was feuding with her friends, all just to generate drama exclusively for MTV’s reality TV show The Hills.

They had a grand wedding in 2009, and for a few months, everything felt great. Then, in 2010, Heidi filed for divorce, while Spencer publicly claimed their marriage had largely been created for television. But what’s that? The ruse was also a fakeout, and a few months later, they called off the split. Despite all that drama, they went on to have a happy life with their two sons.

5. Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly met on the set of Midnight in the Switchgrass in 2020, while Fox was still legally married to Brian Austin Green. The two just clicked as though they were soulmates and quickly became one of Hollywood’s most theatrical couples.

But all the outrageous outfits, intense interviews, dramatic social media posts, and an engagement ring that was designed to be uncomfortable to remove led to the “bad” ending. Breakup rumors and cheating accusations followed their engagement almost instantly. Although they never married, Fox announced her pregnancy in 2024, and the former couple welcomed a daughter in March 2025.

6. Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee

Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee met in late 1994, then took a flight to Cancún and got married on a beach in February 1995 after knowing each other for only a few days. As we all know, those rash decisions are the best building blocks for a stable relationship.

Naturally, tabloids were all over them, and then, well, a private recording was leaked to the masses, becoming one of the internet’s earliest celebrity scandals. Anderson said it was one of the most humiliating and traumatic experiences of her life.

The couple had two sons, but their marriage was getting rockier by the second until 1998, when Lee was jailed for assaulting Anderson. That was it for them, although the couple did reunite more than once afterward.

7. Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton

Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton met in 1999 while filming Pushing Tin. At the time, Thornton was engaged to Laura Dern, but that didn’t last long. Apparently, Dern left home to work on a movie and discovered that Billy had married someone else while she was away.

Thornton and Jolie eloped in Las Vegas in May 2000, and the tabloids could not get enough of the tea. The romance was short-lived, and they eventually split up in 2003. Jolie later said things had changed almost overnight, and suddenly both of them realized they had nothing in common.

8. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, aka “Bennifer,” met while filming Gigli in 2001. After spending some quality time together, they got engaged in 2002 and married in 2003. But by 2004, the relationship was over. Or was it?

In 2021, Affleck and Lopez got together again and tied the knot (yes, again) in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, the second round also ended prematurely amid intense public scrutiny, and divorce papers were on the table in 2025.

9. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Some time later, Jolie met Brad Pitt while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004, when Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston. Pitt and Jolie denied beginning an affair on set, but rumors followed them everywhere. By 2005, “Brangelina” had become official.

The two raised six children and finally married in 2014. Just two years later, Jolie decided to file for divorce following allegations of physical abuse. Pitt was investigated, but no charges were filed. After years of going back and forth and deciding who would get what, the actors finally divorced in 2024.
