When your life is as public-facing as a celeb, trying out different hairstyles is part of the gig. After all, you’re going to be on camera more often than not. But when some stars switch it up, their transformations are so shocking that they sometimes look like a completely different person, surprising us all.
1. Jason Mamoa
Known for his thick beard and long, unruly waves, Jason Mamoa is a classic man’s man with his grooming style — except for when he gets rid of that rugged aesthetic. With trimmed hair, he looks much younger and more approachable, making for a dramatic shift.
2. Zooey Deschanel
Known for her signature bangs, Zooey’s fringe is a part of her look in and out. However, she’s occasionally grown those bangs out into a long curtain bang. In 2001, she was seen without bangs and with blond hair, looking like a totally different person. She told Glamour, “Would I ever give them up? I have, and I might again — for a role, perhaps — but I really don’t feel like myself without them.”
3. Sabrina Carpenter
This pop star has a retro-inspired style that works well with her voluminous bangs, but like Zooey, she’s almost unrecognizable when she switches up her haircut. When she starred on the Disney Channel, she had no bangs, but when she switched to music, she switched to the now-iconic bangs, which, apparently, were inspired by a breakup.
4. Elizabeth Olsen
We’re used to seeing this “You” star try out different bangs, but when she slicked them back at the UK premiere of “Eternity,” we were not ready for the transformation that the wet hair look would have, bringing out her striking eyes and features.
5. Zach Galifanakis
He often plays bearded characters with chaotic vibes, but that awkward comedic vibe changed significantly when he shaved and lost weight. The swap from unkempt, shaggy hair to shorter styled hair and a clear-shaven face really made us do a double take.
6. Jennifer Lawrence
This “Hunger Games” actor has experimented with a few different looks (both bangs and no bangs), but what really transformed her was her 2025 Gotham Film Awards look, where we saw her long bob hair in a middle part and tucked behind her ears. It was a sleek, modern, and grown-up look that surprised us, especially since we’re not used to seeing her forehead very often.
7. Halle Berry
The hairstyle evolution of Halle Berry is truly inspiring (and also makes us jealous that we can’t pull off as many looks as she can.) While you might know her for wavy, longer hair with bangs, when she first rose to fame, she wore a pixie cut without bangs. Both looks are so different, yet so gorgeous on her.
8. Ariana Grande
When pop queen Ariana trades in her ultra-dark long ponytail for bouncier, natural blond curls, it gives her a completely different look, softening her look significantly and giving her a totally different vibe. When she first started her career in the 2010s, she dyed her hair bright red — the transformations are never-ending!
9. Kris Jenner
In the past, Kris Jenner would always wear her hair short with her forehead uncovered. To make her current look a bit younger and more refined, she’s been seen in a chic, blunt bob with bangs down to her eyes. We do miss seeing those bright eyes, which help bring out her dazzling smile, but this new look makes her fit right in with her daughters.
10. Taylor Swift
Today, you might recognize T-Swift from her signature cat-eye liner, a bright red lip, and bangs. But in 2007, when she showed up at the CMT Music Awards, she had none of these things. She wore long, curly hair with a side part that showed off her whole face, and regular black eyeliner with a pink lip gloss.
