If you want to talk about one of the best bro movies ever made, Top Gun has to be a part of that conversation at some point. The movie was filled with a bunch of actors that had their careers launched by this movie and have since then become household names you see popping up in loads of movies. Now that the sequel is coming out – a whopping 36 years later – let’s take a look at where the original cast is now.
Tom Cruise
In between both Top Gun movies we’ve mostly seen Tom Cruise do almost a dozen Mission Impossible movies and a bunch of other action movies. Top Gear really launched him into Hollywood stardom and even at 59 years of age it looks like Cruise has no intention of slowing down any time soon.
Val Kilmer
Being the main rival of Tom Cruise it’s no wonder that Val Kilmer is coming back in the sequel as Iceman. Sadly, Val has had some cosmetic surgery done since then which has led to him not looking anything like the Val Kilmer we know from Top Gun, the Batman movie or when he played Jim Morrison in the Doors biopic.
Meg Ryan
Starring in almost every romcom in the 90s is Meg Ryan. She hadn’t acted too much in recent years and worked more behind the screen as a director, but has decided in 2019 to end her acting career for good. You can’t really blame her, she already has a pretty impressive resume.
Tim Robbins
If you’ve seen the Shawshank Redemption, you know who this man is. If you haven’t seen the Shawshank Redemption, go watch it now. He’s now sharing his time between acting and working as a director, but he hasn’t really been doing big budget movies anymore.
Anthony Edwards
Anthony played “Goose”, Tom Cruise’s best friend in the original Top Gun. It only makes sense that his character would be back for the sequel. Edwards hasn’t been too succesful in his acting career however, and the Top Gun sequel is his first project since 2015. His list of notable roles is surprisingly short, his biggest role was in the 2007 movie Zodiac.
Clarence Gilyard Jr.
While Clarence starred in Top Gear, he’s probably better recognized for his part in Karate Kid: Part II or the best Chrismas movie ever, Die Hard. He recently hasn’t been doing too much acting as he’s barely done a handful of projects in the last five years.
Kelly McGillis
You’d think Maverick’s girlfriend would be back for the sequel, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Kelly barely got any acting jobs after Top Gear and has decided to live her life as an acting teacher in New York. Her last outing as an actress goes back to 2011, and her career had already gotten in a slump by then.
