Miley Cyrus has been in the public eye for many years, ever since she began her career as a kid star on the Disney Channel. She was almost bound to be in the limelight as her father Billy Ray Cyrus is an iconic country music star. But fans knew way before her big break that she would end up being someone distinctive in her generation. Read on to learn more about how Miley Cyrus made the amazing transformation from child actress to adult superstar in the entertainment industry.
Miley Cyrus started her career when she was quite young, when Hannah Montana premiered on the Disney Channel in 2004. The show was so successful that she released several albums that went straight to the top of the music charts. Her 2010 album was entitled, “Can’t Be Tamed,” and was one of the first projects that was a turning point for her. It showed parts of her true personality and was the beginning of Miley shedding her Disney star persona.
At the young age of just 12 years old, she was a huge role model for many girls her age. It was also around this age that she became much more well known in the music world, which she really ran with and made the most of.
As she continues to become the star that she is, there are times when Miley does reflect back on her beginning days of stardom. In 2021, a video resurfaced of her audition for Hannah Montana. It reminded fans just how sweet and charming she was in her early days as an upcoming actress. She smiled big in the video to make a good impression on the casting directors, and even wore a graphic tee that read, “I go to school to gossip.”
Miley reflected back on the video and that time of her life, saying, “The first time I was ever in this building, which I drove to from Nashville with my mom … I had to sign in at the desk right there and tell them, ‘I’m here for an audition.’”
It may seem like now that she would have walked right in and gotten the part immediately. But Miley actually had to go through three rounds of auditions before landing the role that totally changed her life forever.
And she played the part of the Disney star for years until 2010, when she totally shocked her fans and the whole world. During a concert in Portugal that year, Miley sported a green onesie that showed off her backside. She showed off a different side of herself, and it started to change her image and moved her into a different demographic of fans.
She continued to make more riskier moves in her public appearances, such as the bob and pixie cut hairstyles during her 2011 “Gypsy Heart Tour.” But she really turned some heads at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Dawned with a fuzzy bear onesie and pixie cut pigtails, she performed on stage with her tongue out, accompanied by dancers in large pink bear costumes.
Not only did this awards show change her image drastically, but her duo performance with Robin Thicke brought a major scandal to his career – as they danced very provocatively together, while Robin Thicke was still a very married man.
Miley later told Harper’s Bazaar that she was subsequently typecast as a result of the performance. “It became something that was expected of me. In the beginning, it was kind of like saying, ‘[Screw] you. Girls should be able to have this freedom or whatever.’ But it got to a point where I did feel sexualized.”
Regardless of the many changes that Miley has faced during her career, she has become a respected and loved singer, known for her amazing voice and meaningfully stirring lyrics.
