We’re used to movies showing us beautiful locations, transporting us through time and space, and showing us different countries and even different worlds, but at their core movies tell us stories. And not all stories are meant to be about traveling, in fact, quite many stories happen in one place. So today we thought we’d give you a list of best one-location movies that are incredibly captivating despite being set in one location.
The movie takes place in the car. The main character is driving from London to Birmingham and has multiple phone conversations throughout his journey. And even though all we see is him driving in the car, Tom Hardy does such a great job taking us on this literal and emotional journey. There are high stakes, stressful conversations and lots of emotions. You’ll be surprised how much can happen in a movie literally set in a car.
We bet you didn’t think of this classic as a one-location film, but when you think about it, the majority of the film takes place in one place – the detention room. And yet all five very different characters get a chance to be in the spotlight and have their say and it never feels like you’re crammed into one room, there’s space for exploration.
3.12 Angry Men
This is a prime example of a one-location movie. It’s set almost entirely in one jury room where 12 people are discussing the homicidal trial. There’s tension, there’s character growth, there’s a life at stake. It’s an interesting exploration on how 12 strangers are meant to decide the fate of one person and come to a unanimous decision. It’s also fascinating to see how facts and events can be manipulated and how people’s prejudices reveal themselves.
4.The Man From Earth
This is definitely a movie that will make you think. It takes place in one room where friends are gathered for a last get together with their friend that’s moving away. And through the evening they discover that the reason he’s leaving is because he’s immortal and it’s time for him to move on to another place before it becomes suspicious that he doesn’t age. Is he making this up, is this a joke or has he actually been around for hundreds of years and is telling the truth?
A robbery goes really badly, and the group of criminals meet at a designated location after it. They suspect there’s a rat amongst them. Someone who works for the police and who set them up for failure. And because it’s a Tarantino movie, of course, things get bloody.
You know what happens here right? James Franco plays Aron Ralston who becomes stuck in a Canyon. He’s trapped between a rock and a hard place, quite literally. His arm is stuck, there’s essentially no hope of being rescued and there’s only so long you can go without food or water in a desert.
7.The Phone Booth
Colin Farell somehow managed to make watching a mad trapped in a phone booth for an entire movie seem absolutely riveting. A hitman has him trapped and is threatening to shoot him the moment he leaves the phone booth. His only communication with the world is the phone, obviously.
8.10 Cloverfield Lane
So if you woke up trapped in an underground bunker with two strangers and told that you’re there because the planet has been taken over by horrible monster aliens, would you believe it? Would you be thankful or would you assume you’re being held hostage by some freak kidnapper?
