You heard of the Witcher surely? The show follows Geralt of Ricia who is a monster hunter struggling to find his place in a world where people are often much more wicked that beasts. Destiny alone leads him to a sorceress and a princess, the three characters travel the continent together. Sounds great right? Check out these 7 things you need to know about the upcoming Netflix show.
1. Show > Game > Book
The show is based on a very popular video game of the same name, which was released back in 2007, however the video game was based on a series of fantasy stories written in Poland published at the start of the 1990’s. The books were not that popular only being read in Eastern Europe, it was only when the video game was released that English versions of the books were published. These books were then widely read across the world leading to the popular Netflix series.
2. Big plans
Netflix has recently announced that the first season of the show will have 8 episodes. This is not that many compared to other shows, but it is predicted that the show will become very popular and make at least one more season. If the anticipation for the show is a guide then surely the show will go on to be very popular with its viewers.
3. The leading actor
The Superman actor Henry Cavill has ditched his superman roles to take on the role of Geralt of Rivia, this has expressed some disappointment from die hard fans who felt other actors may be perfect for the role. Check out his long ‘Legolas’ hair style making him almost unrecognisable from his superman persona.
4. Character update
In the show Geralt holds his swords differently from the game and books, which could cause some fan hate.
5. Eastern Europe
The original books were written by an Eastern European Andrzej Sapowski, so it was decided that filming will take place in Eastern Europe (mostly in Hungary). But we’ll also see some locations in Spain, as well as the beautiful islands of La Gomera and La Palma.
6. Strong women
Even though the story follows the Witcher who tries to find his place in life, there are plenty of strong female characters. Ciri, the young princess of Cintra, Yennefer, is a sorceress and is also Geralt of Rivia’s main love interest. Other strong women in the show include Jodhi May as Queen Calanthe and Millie Brady as the outcast Princess Renfri.
