Before any major movie is produced there is a long, excruciating casting for the leading roles. Sometimes the success of the whole movie or movie franchise depends on the right casting of the main characters, especially with book and comic adaptations. There is a certain image in the minds of people and if the actor doesn’t fit in well enough – poof! The movie becomes a flop. Naturally, most of our favourite movies had several actors trying for the leading roles. Here are 10 famous movie roles almost played by other actors.
John Krasinski – Captain America
Can you imagine someone else playing Captain America? Chris Evans looked so natural in this role that it’s hard to believe we could have had John Krasinski wearing the star-studded suit, helmet, and shield.
Jennifer Lawrence – Bella Swan
Wow, that was close! Kristen Stewart might have been propelled into stardom by this movie franchise, but it would have killed Jennifer Lawrence’s career, judging by the movies she’s starred in since Twilight came out.
Henry Cavill – Edward Cullen
Okay, if Henry Cavill and Jennifer Lawrence were the Twilight’s leads the movies might have been a little bit more watchable. Still, it’s hard to imagine Superman Henry Cavill in a role of dreamy sparkling vampire in love with a human girl. But that would have been one good-looking vampire indeed!
Saoirse Ronan – Rey
You may or may not like the latest Star Wars movies, but I think we can all agree that Rey, portrayed by Daisy Ridley, looks pretty convincing. It turns out gorgeous Saoirse Ronan also wanted to play the part! It’s hard to imagine what this classy period-drama actress would have brought to the table, but it could have been good!
Britney Spears – Allie Hamilton
Our favourite love story The Notebook could’ve taken a different turn with Britney Spears playing the leading lady. That’s right! She auditioned for the role and even tried what it would feel like playing with Ryan Gosling in a screen test.
Scarlett Johansson – Judy Shepherd
Do you remember the 90s hit movie Jumanji starring Kirsten Dunst? Well, it turns out Scarlett Johansson also auditioned for the role of Judy Shepherd! Thankfully, her career didn’t suffer in any way without the movie.
Liam Hemsworth – Thor
Chris Hemsworth is our most favourite Thor in the whole world, but the role could have just as easily gone to his little bro Liam. Yes, it’s true! Both brothers were in the final five of soon-to-be-Thors, but eventually film’s producers decided to go with Chris. Liam would’ve been a cool Thor, too.
Emma Watson – Mia
La La Land is one of the coolest romcoms and musicals ever made, but it would have looked entirely different without the chemistry between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Emma Watson was supposed to get the role of Mia, but had to cancel due to her filming for Beauty and the Beast.
Matthew McConaughey – Jack
Back in the day Matthew McConaughey was all about romcoms and drama, that’s why he auditioned for the role of Jack in Titanic. He was absolutely sure that he’d get the role! The movie would have looked totally different with him as the leading man. Would it still turn into this legendary romantic drama we all know and love today? Who knows.
Will Smith – Neo
It’s next to impossible to imagine what the legendary sci-fi saga would have looked like without Keanu Reeves playing the leading role. He was such a perfect match for Neo! But it turns out Will Smith, who was already big in the 90s, was also invited to play the part. For better or for worse, he turned down the role to star in Wild Wild West.
