While there are definitely some people out there that’ll fight about what Ariel the little Mermaid should look like, we think it’s fun to experiment and see as many versions of our favourite characters as possible. Why would you want to limit yourself and your imagination? These are fictional characters and it’s not hurting anyone if we play around with what they look like. If you’ve seen Spiderman into the Spider-Verse you know that many countries have their own take on the same superhero, so it makes sense that someone would do this with other characters too, it’s not just superheroes that we pay attention to. Today we thought we’d take a look at some of our favourite childhood characters but in a new and unusual light. This artist has a pretty interesting style and we can definitely get behind some of these ideas. Spectacular genderswaps ahead – you’ve been warned.
1. Ariel
Ariel as a man looks absolutely amazing and we love that there’s a little seashell necklace instead of a seashell bra. And as you can see, Ariel’s best friend Flounder is now a female fish with a lovely hair accessory and very pretty lashes.
2. Princess Mononoke
It probably makes more sense to say Prince Mononoke for this illustration. But you can’t deny that the gender swap, in this case, looks absolutely amazing and we would want to see a movie like that. But of course, the classic is out favourite.
3. Beaty and The Beast
This is such a cute and funny rendering of Beauty and the Beast. The male Beauty actually looks like it could be on the cover of a romance novel, while the female Beast just cracks us up with the makeup and the styled hair.
4. Elsa
Be honest, you wouldn’t say no to this version of Elsa. Can someone please make this into a movie? We’re pretty sure there would be many fans, based solely on the fact that many already have a crush on Jack Frost.
5. Pocahontas
Who’s this handsome dude with a beautiful necklace? Well, obviously it’s the male equivalent of Pocahontas and let me just say he’s looking fine as hell. What’s your opinion on dudes with long hair?
6. Esmeralda
Look at that open shirt, the gold jewelry, that arched eyebrow, that attitude. We stan male Esmeralda and everything he stands for. Can you already see being made into the most fabulous musical in history? Apart from the original, of course.
7. Ursula
Ursula as a male character looks way more fit and like he spends ages in the gym. Are there gyms at the bottom of the ocean? Does this dude lift heavy weights with all the tentacles? Or does he just swim around a lot?
8. Jacka and Sally
This gender swap didn’t really change much for us. Nightmare Before Christmas was already such a unique movie that we’re pretty sure changing the character’s genders wouldn’t change how the story went at all.
9. Cruella De Vil
How come Cruella was just evil in the movie and here the male version also looks hot? I mean, obviously, the whole idea of making a fur coat from puppies is stupid and cruel, but if you just look at this drawing – it’s a perfect combination of hot character and adorable puppies. What’s not to like?
10. Maleficent
Let’s end this on the male version of Maleficent. We think this is an absolute work of art. Can we please at some point start getting actual movies where villains look like this and dress like this and are this freaking fabulous? Pretty please with a cherry on top?
