A secret below Sphinx’s ear
Sphinx was built thousands of years ago and still it baffles scientists and historians with new hidden nooks discovered every day. For instance, do you know what’s hiding behind the chamber located below Sphinx’s ear? Scientists argue it’s too small to be an actual entrance for humans, while others note that if it’s not an entrance, then why block it? There’s a theory that something was attached there, like a part of headpiece that went missing over the years. There’s also a Russian guy who claims he was a Martian warrior in the past life and there’s some technology hidden below that ear… It can really be anything at this point!
Flesh-eating tombs in Turkey
Assos, an ancient Turkish city, is home to a number of unusual sarcophagi that are known to decompose bodies in a record amount of time – 40 days! Just so you know, usually it takes from 50 to 100 years. What makes these sarcophagi so special? Scientists don’t know for sure, but the main theory is that high amount of aluminium inside those tombs helps decompose bodies faster. Yet no one knows for sure!
Ancient CD-ROM
This is literally a disk chock-full of data, but no one can get close to understanding what the ancient messengers were trying to say. The highly mysterious Phaistos Disk is 37000 years old, belonging to the Minoan Civilization, and recent studies suggest that it is actually a prayer to Aphaia, an ancient goddess of fertility and childbirth. The disk is the most ancient example of printed material, as some kind of stamps were used to create the markings on clay (242 all in all). You could say this mystery is almost cracked, but there’s still a lot to translate to understand the actual meaning of the disk’s inscriptions.
Copper treasure map
How about an ancient copper scroll for a treasure map? Experts believe that this is exactly what it is! Found in one of the caves at the Dead Sea, this cooper scroll is believed to be a map to the Jewish treasures, especially that of the Second Jewish Temple. Actually, many parts of the map have already been deciphered, but it doesn’t make it any easier to find the treasure as the map is incredibly precise with the location and describes the objects that don’t exist anymore.
Puma Punku stones
If you think the Inca Empire was pretty cool, then what about the civilization that pre-dated it? Tiwanaku Empire existed around 300 AD and is responsible for a huge temple complex near Tiwanaku in Bolivia. Intricate stonework is what makes Puma Punku such an unusual place. The megalithic stones found there, each weighing dozens of tons, were cut with such intricate precision, that they locked perfectly onto each other – even a razor blade couldn’t slide in-between them! We’re talking about machine-quality work here by the civilization that supposedly had no writing system and had no idea about the wheel. Something certainly doesn’t add up!
Costa Rican spherical stones
‘Las Bolas’ from Costa Rica are a series of perfectly round balls that weigh more than 16 tons each. Built by the ancient Diquis culture, these stones were scattered all over Costa Rica. Although scientists know the origin of the balls, they still have no idea as to why they were put there and what function did they have. Their placement seems quite chaotic as well!
Discovery of America
What do Egyptian mummies and America have in common? You may say nothing, but here’s where you’d be wrong. Archaeologists have analysed the mummy of Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses and what they found was truly shocking. It turns out, the mummy’s insides contain traces of coca and tobacco, things that could be found only in America at that time. Does it mean that Egyptians already knew about America or even discovered it? We have no idea for now.
